Water Conservation Alert
« on: October 13, 2008, 06:19:03 PM »
Water Alert:  Drinking a cool glass of water (or 8 glasses a day) is good for your body.  It helps keep you alert, and keeps your blood flowing and your kidneys from being overworked, so drink as much water as you'd like.  But when it comes to flushing toilets, washing cars, or watering lawns, we need to be more stingy with our water.  Water is a precious resource, and our water supply is shrinking.  The Colorado River is in its eighth year of drought, and the Sierra snowpack is at its thinnest ever.  In response, on 10/8 the Escondido City Council voted Wed. to impose a water conservation program.  Initially we're at Level One; the highest designation is Level Four.  The goal of a Level One alert is to cut water use by 10%  by not washing driveways with water, watering landscaping only between 4PM and 7AM, and repairing water leaks.  Back in the '70's, during an earlier drought, Californians had a saying for toilet use, started by Senator Hasagawa "yellow is mellow and brown is down".  With autumn upon us we can also soon greatly reduce our watering amounts/time as the days become cooler and shorter.
